A Custom House Sign with a Personal Touch: The Story of Wilson House

A client contacted me with a thoughtful request: she wanted an outdoor sign as a unique gift for a special occasion. Her friend had just opened a psychotherapy practice, and she wanted to celebrate this new beginning with something truly personal.

She described her friend as a sensitive person with a love of flowers, especially hydrangeas. The practice had classic, cottage-style architecture, with a garden leading to the front door. The sign would welcome visitors at the entrance, so it needed to complement both the building and its surroundings.

The name was Wilson House. My client wanted the design to feel completely personal, with delicate details that would keep the overall composition light and balanced.

Turning Handwriting into Part of the Design

As I considered the request, I wondered how I could make this custom house sign feel even more connected to its owner.

Then an idea came to me: what if I used her own handwriting?

I asked my client whether she could send me a photograph of the name “Wilson” handwritten by her friend. Rather than choosing a standard font, I could use those individual letterforms as the starting point for the lettering on the sign.

That small detail became the heart of the design.

Hydrangeas Inspired by a Cottage Entrance

For the mockup, I arranged pink, white and purple hydrangeas around the name, leaving enough white space to keep the lettering clear and the flowers delicate.

The palette was chosen to complement the practice’s existing colors, while the floral composition suited its cottage character and garden setting.

I then hand-painted the finished design on porcelain for outdoor display. The combination of her favorite flowers, carefully coordinated colors and her own handwritten “Wilson” made the plaque personal in a way that a name alone could never achieve.

This project captures what personalization means in my work: listening to the story behind a request and finding ways to express it through the design.
